5 Ways to Boost Your Confidence Today

Confidence is something I’ve struggled with for as long as I can remember.

I was not one of those thick-skinned people that could take criticism and insults and roll with the punches. Sure, I’d laugh and act tough, but I’d go home seriously contemplating what was said. My heart would easily be affected by the words and actions of others.

It got to a point where my self esteem would literally be sky-high one day and at rock bottom the next. I had no idea that there were actionable steps I could take to grow my self esteem and boost my confidence.

Once I started doing these things, I found myself walking a little taller and increasingly more secure in myself and in who I was in Christ.

5 Ways to Boost Your Confidence Today

It’s so easy to lose sight of who we are in Christ when our confidence falters.

In fact, even in these 5 things that I will share below, you have to continue to see yourself in the light of Christ in order for any true confidence to be built. (I’ll get to this more later)

For now, let’s dive into 5 ways to boost your confidence today.

1. Exercise

Exercise is one of the greatest weapons against low confidence, stress, depression, anxiety and so on. Exercise is not only good for your body, but it is good for your mind.

It is so important to incorporate exercise into your weekly routine. And it doesn’t have to be a lot!

Today, just start with 20 minutes. You can take a walk. Ride a bike. Run outside or on the treadmill. Do something to get your heart pumping.

This will immediately release the chemicals in your brain that you need for confidence, happiness and lowered stress!

2. Consider Your Language

Changing your language about yourself and to yourself is so essential in order to boost your confidence. This is one I’ve only started to do recently.

First, consider how you talk to yourself.

Your self-talk needs to be positive in order to boost your confidence. Consider what you say to yourself when your working, with friends, around the house.

You might be surprised at how often your talk to yourself negatively.

Even phrases like, “that was dumb!” or “I’ll never get the hang of this.” can affect the way you see yourself.

When you notice your self-talk like this, instead change it to things like, “that’s okay, everyone makes mistakes.” or “I’ll get it next time.”

As your self talk becomes more positive, your confidence will grow.

Second, consider how you talk about yourself.

A few tips here. How do you talk about yourself when your nervous? When your explaining or telling stories?

Cut out any and all negative comments or descriptions of yourself!

Don’t apologize when your not truly seeking forgiveness. We’ve grown accustomed to saying “sorry” instead of “thank you”.

If someone does something for you, thank them! Don’t apologize for your lack of-something.

And don’t ever talk down on yourself.

Recently, I was with some friends getting ready to take on some outdoor work. I was nervous about this project because I’d only done this sort of thing a few times. I was also unsure of where to start. So instead of asking, waiting to learn or even starting another conversation in the meantime, the phrase that came out of my mouth is, “I am no good at this.”

It was my way of trying to let them know I didn’t know where to start. But it was a total attack on my confidence. And I was the one who said it!

Immediately I wanted to reel in those words and change them. But the deed was done. The rest of the time, my confidence was lowered because I had offered negative words about myself.

Always speak positively about yourself. This doesn’t mean you can never seek advice or talk to someone about your struggles.

Start today by speaking positive words over your life, both to yourself and about yourself.

3. Body Language

This one may seem slightly silly at times. But never underestimate the power of a smile or altered posture in boosting your confidence.

Here are some tips of altered body language to boost your confidence.

  • Smile
  • Stand or sit with good posture
  • Don’t fidget
  • Dress well
  • Make eye contact
  • Steady your voice, speak with authority (while staying humble)
  • Use purposeful hand gestures
  • Don’t rush, take your time
  • Keep your head up

Often, your body language is a direct reflection of your confidence. Take the time to focus on these little adjustments and it will boost your confidence.

4. Set Goals - Big and Small

Goals are so important to increasing your confidence. When you set and achieve goals, you are telling your brain that you can do what you set out to do.

Every morning I make a to-do list. I start with the small things that I know I’m going to do anyway. Then I intersperse small and big things throughout the day. Being able to check things off, gives me the momentum to keep going.

Even if it’s sometimes as small as transferring a load of laundry, it gets me motivated and feeling accomplished.

I also set bigger goals - weekly goals, monthly goals and yearly goals. These goals keep me on track and confident about where I’m going.

When I start to falter in my direction and confidence, I turn to these goals.

5. Study Your Worth in God

This has been one of the most influential parts of growing my confidence over the past few years.

I didn’t grow up knowing my worth in God. My natural inner voice is always shouting that I don’t have worth!

But, as a child of God we have infinite worth. I started writing my own devotional about who I was in Christ, studying Scripture, reflecting on its truths and praying over each one. Over time, these truths about who I am in Christ became embedded into my heart and my mind.

And as this happened, my confidence grew. After all, as we remember we are sons and daughters of a King, we begin to grasp the power and strength that comes from that truth.

And this grows and boosts your confidence greatly. As I seek to follow God and live for His glory, my confidence has grown so much.

Today, I encourage you to take as many of these steps in growing your confidence as possible.

Don’t allow low self esteem to direct your heart today. Take the steps to boost your confidence and see what happens!

  1. Nicole, thank you for provoking us to think about this. We are bombarded, every single day, with negative messages that undermine us as women. This, in an attempt to control us. And we fall for it. How can we not?

    Except there is only one sovereign, and it isn’t the media! As a new Christian, I am learning to look at the Gospel for the answers. What strikes me most is this: God loves me as I am. I have been made in His image, and in spite of my sinful nature, He loves me so much that he sacrificed His only son for ME! Why would I look elsewhere for my self-esteem? This is the ultimate in love. And this is something I need to remind myself of daily.

  2. Wow, I love this! I used to be very nice to myself, and it really impacted the way I ran my business and approached clients. Since then, I have changed my entire mindset on my self-worth, and I feel absolutely amazing!

  3. I found myself nodding at each one of your suggestions. I struggled myself for a long time, and have finally come to realize all the negative self-talk was straight from the enemy.

    Sometimes, the negative thoughts will pop up, but I quickly replace them with a positive one. Since I am confident in He who loves me and sustains me, it has become much easier. Thanks for sharing!

  5. Wow, I never connected exercise to having more confidence, but I love that practical tip. And as far as what I speak, sometimes I will say something aloud and then immediately correct myself aloud. People probably think I’m crazy, but it’s helping me. 😉

  6. This is great advice. I also struggle with self confidence all of the time and I think it has unfortunately gotten worse the older I have gotten. I have started doing some of these things and have seen an improvement in at least my mood, but I will have to try some of the other ones as well.
