6 Scriptures to Pray Over Your Marriage to Find Hope and Healing
If you are looking for encouragement in your marriage, these Scriptures are ones that you can pray over your marriage to find hope and healing.
I can’t tell you how many times God has reminded me of the importance of praying over my marriage. And how quickly I forget to do this very thing.
Over the years I’ve spent time praying for my marriage, but I struggle to be consistent with it. I will pray for weeks after we’ve gone through something difficult and then slowly fade back into the routine of life and forget how important it is.
But praying over our marriages is one of the most important things we can do in marriage.
Why?
Well, when we pray over our marriages, we are aligning our own hearts with the Lord and allowing Him to use us in our family and with our spouse as He desires. We open the door to God’s glory in our marriage.
When we pray over our marriages, we are also taking our stand against Satan and all his schemes to tear us apart (which are many). Satan wants to see our marriages become a place of lacking intimacy, lacking communication and most of all a comfortable place where we don’t seek God’s glory. In prayer, we build up the shield of faith that will protect us from Satan’s attempts to derail us from God’s plan.
When we pray for our marriages, we are speaking a language of love towards our spouse. And sometimes, it will be one that they never see. In fact, some of the most powerful prayers I’ve seen answered in my marriage were ones that I never shared with my spouse. There may be several reasons we don’t share these prayers, maybe lacking faith of your spouse, a struggle you are walking through, or mismatched expectations that you surrender to the Lord. But in praying, we are loving our spouse in an extremely powerful way.
How Can We Pray for Our Marriages?
There are so many ways that you can pray over your marriage. I will share with you a few of my favorites:
- Create a prayer journal. Write out specific prayers that are on your heart, scriptures that you want to pray over your marriage and prayer requests and praises. You can come back to this journal every day and pray over your marriage.
- The Power of a Praying Wife (or Husband). This book changed the way I prayed for my marriage. It opened my eyes to the importance of prayer in marriage and gave me specific and powerful prayers to pray regularly. I even bought the little booklet of prayers (link) to take with me when I want to pray over specific areas of my marriage or my husband’s life.
- If possible, pray with your spouse. I know this isn’t always possible and it shouldn’t be the only way that you pray for your marriage, but it can be extremely powerful when you come together with your spouse and pray over your marriage. Find regular time (whether every day, once a week or even once a month) to pray over your marriage with your spouse.
6 Scriptures to Pray Over Your Marriage
I want to share these Scriptures as tools that you can use straight from the living Word of God to strengthen your marriage, grow your marriage and follow God’s will for your marriage.
You can focus on one or two or pray each Scripture of your marriage daily. I’d love to hear how you like to pray these Scriptures over your marriage.
Working Together
“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!” -Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
Lord, help me to be my spouse’s helper, encourager and supporter. I know that together we are stronger and I surrender my desires for our marriage and any selfish thoughts I have to You. Help us to be united and to work together selflessly following Your will.
Growing United
May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. -Romans 15:5-6
Lord, thank you for the encouragement you have given me in my marriage. I pray that you would work in my heart and in my spouse’s heart to give us like minds, united in Your will. Where we are not united, bring healing and where we are not encouraged, bring hope.
Loving Well
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” 1 Corinthians 14:4-8
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” Galatians 5:22-23
(I love to pray for each of these. This prayer is structured for just one, but you can pray it through each of the attributes)
Lord, thank you so much for the love that you have given to me and to us. I pray that my heart would more fully know that love in a way that overflows. Help me to be [patient] Lord, in my marriage. Show me ways where I lack [patience] and how I can love my spouse more fully in these areas. Open my eyes to practical ways to show [patience] to my spouse and fill me the love and joy that I need to grow in this way.
Let My Words Be Loving
“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” Ephesians 4:29
Lord, I confess and repent from the unloving words that I have spoken to my spouse. I thank you for the grace and mercy that you have shown me despite this. Help me to speak words that are loving and useful for building up my spouse. Show me ways to encourage my spouse and open the door to intimacy and vulnerability in my marriage.
Submission / Leadership
“Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— for we are members of his body." Ephesians 5:21-30
A Prayer for Wives
Lord, help me to submit fully to my husband. If there are any ways in me that resist this healthy image of submission, I pray that you would bring them to the surface and help me find healing in them. I know that this image of marriage is what you intended and it is not easy for me. But I pray that you help me to lovingly submit to my husband, support him and respect his authority in our marriage. I surrender my heart and my desires to You. Give me a humble heart.
A Prayer for Husbands
Lord, thank you for my wife and the opportunity that I have to love her in this way. Help me to love her in the sacrificial way that you call me to. Show me how to lead her and lead my family in a way that glorifies You and brings us closer to Your will for us. I surrender my heart and my desires to You and ask that you fill me with a desire for Your will so that I can lead my marriage in this way.
When you pray over your marriage to find hope and healing, this is one of the most powerful things that you can do. Don't let Satan steal away your hope and don't be discouraged by hard times. God has a great plan for you and your marriage. Stand strong in prayer and He will bless you.

Wow. This could not have come at a more perfect time. I pray for my husband daily, but need to be praying with more detail and expectancy. This is such a detailed, helpful, and amazing post!
I love this! Prayer is our biggest tool!! Thank you for sharing!
Such good reminders. I can totally identify with the praying for a specific situation and then when it’s done or gotten better, I move on with life and don’t spend as much time praying as I should. I need to work on being more intentional every day.
I needed to read this! Submission is the most difficult aspect for me, and I need to overcome it with prayer. I love the idea of a prayer journal!
The Bible says to never stop praying. Pray in all things. Marriage is such an important one to pray for!
I love this. Prayer is my favorite tool ever, not just for my marriage but everything
I love the book the power of a praying wife, I try to go through it about once a year. I also like the idea of starting a prayer journal. I really enjoy journaling but don’t make time for it.
