How to Draw Near to God When Satan Attacks Your Mind

Have you ever felt overcome by spiritual attack? I know I have wrestled with Satan’s attacks on my mind and learning how to find the strength to stand firm.

These attacks can be overwhelming. They can make us feel hopeless and lost.

But God has something so much better for us. He does not want us living defeated. He wants us to stand firm against Satan’s attacks and overcome them. So today let’s look at how to draw near to God when Satan attacks your mind and find the strength to overcome.

When I first felt overcome by Satan’s attacks on my mind, I thought God had abandoned me. I cried out to Him, begging Him to help me and found no relief. It was a dark and difficult time in my life and it led me to questioning my faith and God.

If you have ever felt overcome in this way, I’m sure you can relate. Because it is an awful feeling. But God never left me. This is a truth I must cling to.

There are ways in which we can find strength and that we can cling to God through these attacks and stand against Satan

The Name of Jesus

One of the first and often only things I can find the strength to do when I feel attacked by Satan is to simply say the name of Jesus aloud.

I want to do so much more than this, but I feel frozen, unable to say anything.

Saying the name of Jesus aloud feels like carrying a ton of heavy bricks. And yet when I do, I feel immediate strength.

I believe that as we say the name of Jesus out loud it does a few things:

  • It directs our hearts and our eyes away from Satan and towards Christ.
  • It proclaims to the enemy where our allegiance lies as a submission to God’s power.
  • It causes Satan to flee.

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

James 4:7

This is a powerful promise.

Saying the name of Jesus aloud actively proclaims that we are resisting Satan’s attacks. That no matter how weak we feel or how overcome we feel, we are resisting. God blesses this immensely.

It is when I have spoken the name of Jesus aloud that I have found the strength to continue to resist Satan and have overcome his attacks.

Scripture is Our Sword

I find that Scripture is one of the most powerful ways to stand against satan’s attacks on my mind.

My mind wanders at night. And often I let it drift right into Satan’s lies. I know this is a way that Satan gets a foothold. And yet it is so tempting to let it wander.

I need to commit to stopping these drifting thoughts right away. And the best way for me to do this, to prevent Satan from getting a foothold is to memorize Scripture and repeat these verses.

Psalm 23 is a Scripture that always comes to mind. It is one of the most easily memorized ones and it is always  my go-to. I will repeat the first few verses (the only ones that I can easily recall) when I find my mind wandering.

Sometimes I wait too long and feel Satan’s attacks begin to pull at my mind. But that is why having this one is helpful.

I find that when I commit time each day to memorizing Scripture, especially sections of Scripture, these verses also come to mind.

What a better way to fall asleep than repeating the Word of God in your mind?

For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword.

Hebrews 4:12

What a powerful promise. God’s Word, Scripture, is sharper than any sword and it is what God calls us to use to stand against Satan’s attacks on our mind.

Are you using this weapon to overcome? What a blessing we have it so readily available to us.

My biggest encouragement would be for you to take one Scripture and memorize it. I love using printable Scripture and prayer cards for this. Start there and watch God help you overcome Satan’s attacks.

Strength in Numbers

Finding accountability and encouragement from friends, mentors and in fellowship is so important in standing against Satan’s attacks on your mind.

Jesus tells us, ‘Where two or three people meet together in my name, I am there with them.’

Matthew 18:20

When you are struggling in darkness, sharing your struggle is a powerful way to shine light into it. Others can help to bring light and truth to our situations when they feel overwhelming.

We are called to carry each other’s burdens. And so that means that we are called to share our own.

How can you find someone to share your struggle with? Doing this will immediately shine light on the dark parts of your pain.

As you draw near to God in these ways, you will find the strength to overcome Satan’s attacks on your mind. You will find freedom. Cling to God’s promises and stand firm!
