When to Walk Away from a Good Thing for Something Better

It’s hard to walk away from something good. Especially when what you’re walking towards involves risk and uncertainty.

Have you ever felt God calling you to leave something or somewhere you felt content and happy in?

When to Walk Away from a Good Thing for Something Better

It takes powerful discernment to recognize God calling you away from something good. Because, if you’re anything like me, when you’re content and happy, you just want to close off to anything that could disrupt or change that.

So if you’re in that place of contentment and you feel the tug of conviction but aren’t sure if you want to or know how to listen in, this post is for you.

I’ve been in that place, a few times actually. Where I was content and happy but started to feel the tug of conviction. And I really feared risking the stability and comfort I’d established.

But I can confidently say that even if it is hard stepping out of where you are now, if God is calling you to it, He has something infinitely better for you and with that leap of faith - so much blessing.

So this post will walk you through how to discern if God is actually calling you to step out and how to find the total courage to confidently step out in faith and follow that call.

How to Really Be Open to God's Call

When we are being called out of our comfort zones, it takes an immense amount of openness and surrender. But how do we truly do this when our hearts are hesitant?

Because when we feel like we are in a good place, it’s hard to step out into uncertainty.

The most important thing to remember in this is found in Romans 8:28.

You make all things work together for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

God is working for your good. He wants good things for you. And better yet, He knows what is good and most of the time we cannot see that from our limited perspective.

So how can we be open and surrender in these moments? By remembering that God has something really good for us. And if He is calling us to step out, there will be blessing and joy beyond what we can imagine.

Learning to be still and surrender takes practice though. And I’ve created a worksheet to help you in this process. This resource is useful during a devotional time, and honestly, I go through it often myself once I start to sense God’s conviction.

How to Discern That Conviction

Discernment is often one of the biggest things that get us stuck when we sense God calling us to something.

Maybe you sense the conviction but don’t know where to go.

Or maybe you know where God is calling you but don’t know how to get there.

Discerning God’s voice isn’t easy. It is referred to as the quiet whisper in the Bible and often times we surround ourselves with the roaring winds.

If you have taken time to hone the practice of being still, now it is time to discern whether it is God’s voice or another that you are hearing.

God will lead you in love and grace while Satan and the world call you out of fear and guilt. I dive more into this in my bundle and Find Your Calling Study. You can download the free bundle below!

Take time to really get to the root of the voice that is calling you to move. As you grow more intimately close with the Holy Spirit, you should be able to discern whether it is God’s voice or the world’s.

Find the Courage to Follow That Call

How many times have you felt called to do something and yet fear held you rooted firm in your tracks?

Maybe it was something like raising your hands in church, going forward for prayer or asking someone for help.

Or maybe it was something bigger like moving your family cross-country or to another country, quitting your job for another job or for ministry or giving money in big ways.

So many times fear is what keeps us from doing God’s will. And that is a scary thought. Because that means that Satan is rejoicing. He wants us planted in fear and not faith.

So how do you find the courage to step out in faith, even when you are afraid?

This is where it is essential to renew your mind.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. -Romans 12:2

God’s Word is a powerful tool to slice through the fear and bring you strength and courage. As you reflect on His word, you will notice your courage grow.

The Find Your Calling Bundle below has a page filled with verses to meditate, reflect on and memorize that will help you specifically grow in courage.

  1. Fear is so huge. I’ve realized to identify when my thoughts are fear based and then reason. Sometimes the fear is completely unjustified, especially if I’m comparing myself to others. 🙂

  2. I can totally relate with this post. Ever since I have embraced spirituality, my life has gone through many positive significant changes to the extent where I just trust the guidance and follow it without a second thought. And it’s such a wonderful gift.

  3. Love this! I say all this recently play out in my own life. Following God’s call definitely takes a lot of courage, but it is so worth it.

  4. So much goodness here! I once was offered a job when I needed one that I had to walk away from. It’s funny because it’s a job I always thought I wanted but when it came down to it I didn’t have that peace from God. Turns out, it was a really bad situation and I was offered a job I loved shortly after!

  5. This is a wonderful post!!!! A few years ago I believe God was calling me to leave my corporate job, and become a blogger. I told God I would never leave an amazing, well paying job, to start a blog, unless I knew for sure it was Him. I asked that in the next round of layoffs, I would be laid off if it was His will. That was a scary prayer to pray. LOL It was a shock, but I felt completely confirmed. It has not always been easier, but what I am doing now is so much better, than what I was doing before. Thankfully God continues to grow us, no matter where we are.

  6. Such important reminders! I really thought we were going to stay on this family farm forever! And I would have been content and happy here. But then God called our family into missions and we are now on deputation. It’s been a crazy transition, but incredible to see God working. It’s different than the future I imagined, but it’s going to be so much better!

But yes, fear still creeps up and your points for addressing this are spot on!
