21 Short Bible Verses for Kids to Memorize to Learn About God

Memorizing Scripture is a practice that has transformed my own life and faith and now as I raise little ones, I know how incredibly important it is for them as well. These short bible verses for kids are a great way to get your children started on Scripture memory.

Kids have such a powerful potential to memorize all sorts of things. So instead of having them fill their minds with all the words to Cocomelon songs or Winnie the Pooh books, take some time to dig into these Scriptures and watch how God works!

Short Bible Verses for Kids About God’s Love & Character

The Lord is good to all. -Psalm 145:9

This verse, along with the second part of it (His tender mercies are over all his works) is a powerful reminder for children that God is always good to them. He knows what they need and cares for them.

Behold, I am with you always. -Matthew 28:20

Jesus reminds his disciples of this before he rises into the heavens. As he sends them out to do the Lord’s will and to spread the gospel, Jesus knows the importance of this truth. We can remind our children that as they step out in faith and do what God has called them to do, He is with them always!

The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness. -Psalm 103:8

This one is a little longer and can be broken down but this is a powerful list to teach our children about the loving character of the Lord. This is a powerful foundation for them as they grow and face trials throughout their young lives.

Short Bible Verses for Kids About Creation

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. -Genesis 1:1

God created everything. I love saying this with my two year old! Then we’ll look around and point out everything we see, “God made the trees! God made the grass! God made the birds!” God is our Creator and this verse is a great start for teaching children that.

Short Bible Verses for Kids for Encouragement

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. -Psalm 56:3

Children face fears all the time. Whether it’s late at night and they need night bible verses for encouragement or if it is at school or a friend’s house, this is a powerful reminder that when they are afraid, they can turn to the Lord. This is an action we must teach our children so that they learn to turn to Him and not to something else as they grow.

I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me. -Philippians 4:13

With Christ by their side, our children can do whatever it is that He calls them to!

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. -Isaiah 43:5

Another reminder that God goes with our children and will help them face whatever it is they have before them.

Jesus said, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” -Matthew 19:26

With Jesus, the impossible is now made possible. Talk about some of the powerful miracles in Scripture with your kids. This verse will help teach them that it is God who is behind these miracles, both in Scripture and in our lives.

Short Bible Verses for Kids About How to Treat Others

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. -Ephesians 4:32

Love these as things we can teach our children about how to treat each other. I especially love it as an everyday example with siblings. There are so many opportunities within our homes to teach our kids to be kind, tender hearted and to forgive.

A second likewise is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ -Matthew 22:39

This leads to some foundational conversations about who our neighbors are (not just next door neighbors) and how we can love them well.

Short Bible Verses for Kids About Knowing What’s Right

Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking lies. -Psalm 34:13

This is a great reminder for our kids and having this memorized will be a great verse to call up when they are tempted to lie.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. -Ephesians 6:1

I love this. Children obey your parents for this is right. Not because you get a treat or because you will be punished (although discipline and encouragement are two very helpful and necessary things) but because it is right. God calls our children to obey because it is the right thing to do and this is something that we can teach them in time.

Short Bible Verses for Kids About Salvation

It will be that whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved. -Acts 2:21

“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save that which was lost.” -Luke 19:10

They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” -Acts 16:31

These are both essential verses to teach our children so that they know how they can find salvation in Christ as they grow older. They will also open the door to many conversations about salvation.

Short Bible Verses for Kids About Living as God Calls

Always rejoice. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks. -1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

I love breaking this one down because this is a true foundation of how we can teach our children to live daily. These things, rejoicing, prayer and gratitude, can prepare them to weather the trials and temptations they will face as they grow.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart. -Proverbs 3:5

This is a great reminder for our children in all circumstances, to trust God in everything with all our hearts. This is also something we can model to them as we face different trials or difficulties.

You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can’t be hidden. -Matthew 5:14

What a beautiful picture description we can show our children about how Christ calls us to live. This would be a fun one to draw a picture of as you discuss it with your children.

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might. -Deuteronomy 6:5

Again, this will teach our children how to love God, not just in part but fully.

Short Bible Verses for Kids About Faith

For we walk by faith, not by sight. -2 Corinthians 5:7

This is another great verse that we can model to our children as we face each day. Teaching them to trust the Lord even when it’s hard to understand is difficult and yet a powerful foundation for their growing faith.

What is the shortest verse in the Bible?

Jesus wept. -John 11:35

This is an easy verse to teach our children and we can explain to them how Jesus was sad at times too. This verse can be powerful as we teach our children to feel and to manage their emotions.

Why is memorizing Scripture important for kids?

I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. -Psalm 119:11

Scripture memory is so essential to anyone who wants to stand firm in faith. And kids minds are so impressionable and vulnerable.

When we take the time to teach our children Scripture, we are embedding Truth into their minds. We are helping them to see the world through this lens of truth and we can teach them to face each and every situation as God would call them to.

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. -Proverbs 22:6

As we train up our children in the Lord’s truth and in His ways, we will see the Lord at work.

Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction (training) in righteousness. -2 Timothy 3:16

It is clear that Scripture is what we need to use to train them up in righteousness. God promises that as we do this, our children will not depart from it when they are old (although it may seem like they depart from it along the way!).

Bible Verses for Children’s Protection

In the fear of the Lord is a secure fortress, and he will be a refuge for his children. -Proverbs 14:26

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young. -Isaiah 40:11
