Why Every Wife Needs to Pray for Her Husband

Praying for your husband is about far more than him becoming the husband you desire or keeping him safe and steadfast. I used to think that prayer lists like this were for just that.

But praying for your husband does so much more for your marriage than you can even imagine.

Praying for your husband leads to:

  • Stronger marriage
  • Trusting God with your marriage & husband
  • Being a Godly wife
  • Battling spiritual warfare
  • Speaks God’s blessings over him
  • Deeper intimacy with each other

And so much more. Don’t let Satan fool you into thinking your prayers aren’t going to do anything. Take time to fervently pray for your husband and for your marriage and watch as God transforms and moves.

How to Pray Over Your Husband

Learning to pray for your husband takes time but more importantly, it takes obedience. As we just start praying, God teaches us how we can grow in this area.

When I started praying for my husband, I came across the book, The Power of a Praying Wife. This taught me a lot about praying specifically and fervently for my husband and my marriage.

Here are some of the things I’ve learned about how to pray for your husband.

  • Be Fervent – keep praying, every day. When you don’t feel like it, pray. When you don’t know if God is answering, pray. When you aren’t sure what to say, pray. Pray hard and consistently. It really helps to have specific prayers printed out or written down that you can turn to daily.
  • Be Surrendered – We all have an idea of what we want from our husband, for our husband and in marriage, but God knows these things and His ways are so much higher. As you trust this, you can surrender fully as you pray. Try to take a posture of surrender as you pray for your husband and God will bless this!
  • Be Submitted to God First – As wives, we are called to submit to our husbands and this is so important. But most importantly we need to submit to God first. Ask God to work in your heart to desire what He desires and submit to His plan above all else. As you do this, you will find yourself naturally learning to submit to your husband and to pray for him as God calls you to.
  • Learn to Trust God – Learning to trust God with our prayers is hard but so important. As we learn to trust His plan for us is good and that He will provide what we need, we can pray surrendered and fervently in powerful ways.
  • How to Pray Over Your Marriage – Much in the same way as praying over your husband specifically, praying for your marriage is so important! I would encourage you to use these same tips and pray fervently and surrendered, trusting that God is at work in your marriage. Seek out Scriptures on what God calls you to in marriage and strive to follow Him, no matter what your husband does. And where things don’t go as you hope, pray and surrender to the Lord, trusting His timing.

Don’t miss these prayers for your family too!

How Do I Bless My Husband?

Praying for our husband and our marriage is a powerful way to bless him. But sometimes, I want to find more ways to bless him.

Love Him in His Way

I find that knowing the love language of your spouse is so helpful in finding ways to bless him. If he loves quality time, set aside time in the evening or once a week for just him. If he is an acts of service kind of guy, do something that he is dreading doing that week just because.

Pay Attention to Your Words

Speaking well of and to your husband will bless him tremendously as well. Our words have an impact and when we speak words of life and encouragement, it is visible their effect.

To be honest, I often struggle with this because at the end of a long day I’m grumpy and can’t stand my husband tracking his dirty shoes through the freshly mopped kitchen. It’s in those moments that words of frustration or attitude slip through my lips and taint the entire evening. It’s amazing what a few loving words in those moments do for him.

Make His Priorities Yours

So often my husband and I have different ideas of what’s important. When Saturday rolls around, I have a to-do list that is much different than his. When date night comes, my idea of fun can often look different.

It’s one thing to willingly do what your husband wants to do or allow him to do his to-do’s instead of yours, it’s another to make his priorities yours.

This takes practice and it’s something I try to do in small bits, but when my husband can tell I genuinely want what he wants, it blesses him in big ways!

How Do I Inspire My Husband?

Oh how often I want to inspire my husband – to spend more time with the Lord, with the kids, with me. To work hard. To take care of things.

But more often than not, this desire to inspire him comes across as nagging.

We can inspire our husbands simply by living as God calls us to live and allowing that to shine.

Spend time in the Word. Work hard within your home. Create space for him to do the things you want him to be able to do. But stop and let God take it from there.

We are not the Holy Spirit to our husbands. In the same way that we feel convicted and encouraged to do something, our husbands need the working of the Holy Spirit. Our job is to encourage and bless him as he listens.

What is God’s purpose for marriage?

“For this cause a man will leave his father and mother, and will be joined to his wife. Then the two will become one flesh.” This mystery is great, but I speak concerning Christ and of the church. -Ephesians 5:31-32

Marriage is a beautiful illustration of God’s love for us. It is a symbol of this divine truth. God created marriage as a blessing but also as a powerful way to shine the light of His love to those around us.

Keep this in mind as you pray for your marriage. The goal is not to have a “happy marriage” or even the American dream. The goal is to shine the light of Christ through your marriage.

So when your husband disappoints you or lets you down, how can you pray through this situation in a way that shines the light of Christ?

The Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” -Genesis 2:18

I love this reminder when I think about the purpose of marriage. Woman was created for man. Man needed something more.

This truth is spelled out beautifully in the book, Captivating. We have a powerful purpose in our marriage. As you pray for your husband and your marriage, remember this purpose.

Can prayer change my husband?

We often want to pray for our husbands to change. I’m with you there – there are things that I desire from or for my husband that I want to see change in. But God’s plan is so much bigger.

The biggest thing that changes as we pray for our husbands is our own hearts. God strengthens us and softens us to His plan for our husbands.

Yes, prayer can change your husband. But that is not the goal. As we pray for our husbands, let us be open to God’s guidance and leading of our own hearts.

Let us seek God’s will for our husband and for our marriage above all else. And as we wait for the changes we desire, let us allow God to shape our desires to align with His will.
