What Does Proverbs 31 Say About a Mother?

Proverbs 31 is a powerful depiction of a godly mother. We may look at this as a list of all the things we need to “do” but I would encourage you not to get overwhelmed!

In Christ, we can do all things. God will strengthen us and guide our steps.

I love reading through these verses and taking in what they have to say about my purpose as a mother.

  • Trustworthy (Proverbs 31:11)
  • Selfless (Proverbs 31:12)
  • Hardworking (Proverbs 31:13-16)
  • Strong (Proverbs 31:17)
  • Wise (Proverbs 31:18&26)
  • Humble (Proverbs 31:19)
  • Generous (Proverbs 31:20)
  • Peaceful (Proverbs 31:21&25)
  • Beautiful (Proverbs 31:30)

And so much more. I would encourage you to read through Proverbs 31 and see the powerful purpose that God is calling you to in motherhood. And ask Him to grow these very things in you!

Prayer for Mothers

Lord, I thank you for my family. I thank you for my husband and my children.

I proclaim Your goodness and sovereignty over every area of our lives. Be with me as I seek to love my family well and mother as You have called me to.

I ask that You would nurture my children and grow them up to know You. I ask that You would draw their hearts to You in all things. Open my eyes to the gifts that You have given them and help me to nurture those.

I pray that You would cast out any of the attempts of the Enemy and that Your victory would be over and in us. Help me to promote unity and peace within our home.

Strengthen and sustain me each and every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

How do you pray for encouragement in motherhood?

When you are looking for encouragement in motherhood, I would recommend finding Scriptures to pray. Find promises that are relevant and powerful to pray through.

There is powerful hope in Scripture. You can take a verse like Philippians 4:19 and pray it in this way:

Lord, God, I ask that You would supply every need of mine today, according to Your riches in glory in Christ Jesus. I proclaim that You will and praise You for this, today.

How do you pray for strength in motherhood?

Surrender your weakness! This is the number one thing we must do when we come before the Lord for strength.

We must recognize that we don’t have what it takes, but it is God through us that will provide, nurture our children, make our steps firm, and light our way.

I often put too much pressure on myself to do these things, but it is when I surrender my desires and my weaknesses that I can truly come to the Lord for strength.

Practical Ways to Spend Time in Scripture as Moms

It can be hard to spend time in God’s Word as a mom. From the moment you wake up, there are things to do. Diapers to change, tables to wipe, mouths to feed, drop-offs, discipline, playing, homework-helping, etc., etc.

But whether you are neck deep in the diaper days or busy driving kids to sports and activities, you are called to be in the Word. And you can make time for it.

Maybe it won’t be the thirty-minute, in-depth devotions that you did pre-kids, but just opening the Word can have a massive impact.

After having my second baby, my sleep-deprived mind had convinced me that if I didn’t have a lot of time, it wasn’t worth it.

I could try and read something encouraging on my phone or listen to worship music. But the Bible? No time for that…

Well, not long after I came across the verse

Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Not only was the Word of God meant to encourage and guide me, but it was living and active.

I told myself then that I would open my physical Bible every single day, even if it meant just reading one verse. That one verse would have the power of a two-edged sword.

Here are some practical ways to get into scripture as moms:

1. Open Your Bible – just that! Set it somewhere that makes it easy to open.

2. Get a Bible Reading Plan (like this one) – this helps you to know what to open to. It can be hard if you have no direction. What I love about reading plans is that you can take as little time or as much time as you have. You can simply read the verse and think about it throughout the day, or you can really dig in and read context and study it.

3. Find Someone to Read With – accountability is huge. If you can choose a book of the Bible to read through with a friend, this will definitely help!

4. Do It First Thing – maybe not as practical with a newborn, but once you can wake up early regularly, be sure to get up first thing and make time. Once the day begins, we all know how unpredictable it can be!

5. Get Off Your Phone – I definitely think apps and devotions have a place on your phone when you are on the go, or like previously mentioned, have a little baby, but it is so helpful to have an actual Bible before you. Your phone poses a much higher distraction than the Bible!
